For most people, hiring a career coach is often treated like a short-cut to career success. The most gullible of these are people who are stuck in dead end jobs, those who are jobless and those who are looking forward to taking the next life defining leap in their careers.
One thing these people fail to realize is that, career coaches actually don’t replace their efforts and some of them might even be a disaster for the person who hires them.
To avoid falling into the latter group of career coach hirers-disgruntled, demoralized and disappointed; here are some tips you have to consider before hiring the services of a career coach.
Get recommendations for a successful career coach
This is possibly the best advice any person who is considering looking for a career coach. Ideally, this works pretty simply and what it means is that, you should not hire the services of a career coach who has no history of success to back his analogies. If none of his recruits have made anything for themselves, then probably he or she isn’t that good. Great results will not start with you.
Interview them
This sounds pretty weird, but most experts are for it. Because you are hiring them probably by looking at their LinkedIn profiles and so forth, may be it’s the right time for you to sit back and interview them to assess their qualifications and experience. If they don’t measure up, don’t hire them. Period!
Be specific on what you want
It defeats purpose to go a career coach to help you get a corporate job when all he understands is construction work and CPSC test vacancies. You need to go a notch higher, request for a clear and specific approach they will use to get your career to the next level. This often saves time and disappointments when nothing comes up, because the coach does not ‘get it’.
Control expectations
The common misconception that once you have hired a career coach then you are all set to go-you are totally wrong. It rarely happens that way. A career coach may give you monotonous tasks to teach you something and if you’re not careful, you won’t learn a thing. On the basis of what you do, get good timing slots and commitments so that you are capable of smoothly working with them.
Get a reality check and draft a good contract
Let’s face on fact, even though economies are recovering, some are just a few jobs available. Employers are also looking for different things and they are not necessary academic. As such, let the career coach tell you what chances you stand at getting employment with your present state. The more clearly he/she is able to explain this to you, the higher the chances that you will have a realistic look at the outcomes of the coaching or prospect. Lastly, when it’s not working, be sure to have that included in the contract-that you can terminate it instantly.
