Have you ever had to change up your entire day because someone was late for an interview or a meeting? It can make for a long, frustrating day.
To help avoid this, try using the latest and greatest in conference call technology to conduct telephone interviews. For years, companies have been using conference call systems for holding company meetings with employees around the world. This system makes it possible for employees to live where they want, but still be able to make important business meetings without having to travel long distances. So, why not use conference call systems when conducting interviews with prospective employees?
Advantages
There are many advantages to conducting a telephone interview, including reducing the chances of someone being late. Phone interviews make it impossible to be late because of traffic, getting lost and unforseeable circumstances. If an employee is late to a phone interview in their own home, that may tell you all you need to know about them before the interview even begins.
The high quality of service provided through conference calls systems help eliminate technical difficulties that you have to figure out for yourself. Most systems will give you access to an experienced operator 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The operator can assist with any technical difficulties you may encounter. There is also less of a chance you will experience poor connections and lost calls when using this type of system.
Other advantages of conference call systems include being able to record and play back your interviews at a later time. You can also use the conference call interview to weed out applicants that don’t fit your company’s needs before paying the expenses to conduct an in-person interview.
Access
You and the job candidate can access your conference call in a couple of ways, including over the Internet and with a phone. This makes it possible for you to conduct the interview anywhere there is a phone line or Internet connection. Being able to conduct the interview from your personal office or at home reduces the cost you will have spent for a conference room or other interview location, and allows you to be more flexible. Phone interviews can also be conducted anytime, including the late night hours with candidates from around the world.
Etiquette
Just as you would expect the interviewee to abide by specific etiquette guidelines, you, as the interviewer should follow similar ones too. Make sure you’re logged in for the call on time (if not early) and keep things quiet on your end of the line. Try to avoid any unnecessary interruptions by closing the door and turning off other phones. Have the candidate’s résumé in front of you for quick reference. And finally, remember to smile. The person on the other line of the conference call will hear the smile in your voice, which may make him or her feel a little more at ease.
