As we all know, we are in deep recession and jobs are trying to cut losses by laying people off. Considering their options, they will usually keep employees that they see are a perfect fit for the company. Although, there are some companies that start the laying off process by eliminating those at the bottom of the company first. So what can you do to keep your job? It is all common sense really! Just by following these simple steps, you can increase your chances of not being chosen to be laid off.
1. Attendance
Most companies always looks for someone’s attendance records first to see if you are always in time and prepared to work. Those with the higher attendance ratings are highly prized and are rarely considered the ones that are laid off. Coming to work early not only shows determination, but also sets an example that many employers look for in someone they tend to keep. So come to work early!
2. Performance
The next thing they look for is someone’s performance. Those with a low performance or output rate are more likely to get the boot than someone who is always trying to work at their best. Some companies prefer someone who has a higher input of quality, rather than quantity. For example, person A produces 100 products but they only have a 50% chance of a working product while person B produces 50 products but the products work 100%. Person A might have produced more, however, the failed products will make the company lose money, therefore person A is more likely to get the boot than person B.
So polish up on your performance skills.
3. Attitude
When companies are deciding to keep an individual, they look at their attitudes towards their working habits. Those with a positive attitude tend to yield a better outcome than those who have negative attitudes. Let’s say for instance, person A and B both have the same attendance and performance rating but person A always comes to work in a bad mood while person B always comes to work in a good mood, who do you think will get the boot? Do not come to work in a bad mood, instead leave negative moods outside the workplace. Nobody wants to keep someone who is always grumpy!
4. Be Courteous and Helpful
Many companies look for individuals who are aggressive in learning how their company works. Someone who is always trying to help others not only shows your ability to learn and grow with the company, but it could also be your ticket to a promotion or having the company to ask for your opinion/advice/help in future projects.
Get to know those who you work with!
Companies are not only looking for someone who can work hard, but they are also looking for someone who can be a people person, someone who can captivate their fellow employees. They look for those traits when they decide whether you stay with the company or not. Like the saying “knowing people from high places,” knowing who you work with not only allow you to grow with the company, but can also prevent you from getting the axe.
Those simple tips mentioned above are a great rule of thumb to help you stay at your job. Remember, companies are looking for someone who is a prime example of what their perfect employee should be like someone who has a great attendance record, someone who can efficiently produce a product, someone who is always in a positive mood, someone willing to grow with the company, and someone who is a people person.
