You might be the best salesman for the job, but if your resume doesn’t demonstrate your ability to sell yourself, chances are you won’t even get an interview.
Just like any sales pitch, your resume has to immediately make an impact, and with these tips, you can make sure it’s a good one.
1. Adjust the formatting of your resume – Make sure it is easy for recruiters and gatekeepers to easily find the information they need at a glance. Make sure your contact information is at the top, and follow that with a career summary section. The summary should be followed by your work experience, rather than your education level (unless you recently graduated within the last three years or so). Your employment dates should be clearly visible, otherwise businesses might think you are hiding something.
2. In your summary section, briefly highlight why you have the experience and success rate that would warrant an interview. If you have industry knowledge specific to a particular job opening, this is the place to mention it.
3. Make sure your achievements mean something – whether that means you use numbers or you utilize buzzwords (sparingly) that help set you apart, you want to state your quantifiable achievements in your work experience section. This can include statements about your responsibilities, your results, your percentages in growth and your success rate compared to others in your position.
4. A sales resume often runs the chance of sounding too self-centered and pompous, so make sure you are honest and specific in your goals and achievements. If you are having a difficult time thinking of ways you benefited your previous company, ask yourself how you met quotas or exceeded them in anyway. How have you salvaged client accounts or built new ones? How did you overcome obstacles, and how can you do the same for another company?
5. Keep confidentiality in mind – It shouldn’t surprise you that not many companies want to go public about their sales numbers. Make sure that nothing you say in your resume portrays anything confidential to the company.
6. Some companies utilize software to do the preliminary sort through resumes, so make sure you use any industry specific keywords that might interest them. Words that they might be looking for include things like: manager, inbound and outbound sales or account executive. Also be sure to include specific keywords to the industry, like IT sales or medical sales if applicable.
Creating the perfect sales resume isn’t hard, and if you put the proper time into it, your chances of success in your job hunt are much higher.
