5 Perfect Careers For Finance Majors (With Available Jobs Now!)

I was an English major in college. I don’t regret studying English, as it was my passion and my studies held my interest, but the common joke nowadays is that my discipline is the one you should choose if you want to end up selling vacuums door to door. The truth of the matter is largely different, but that’s not to say I suggest majoring in “Literary Studies” in favor of something with more practical applications. Finance is one of the better majors available, especially if you have a head for math, because you learn valuable skills that set you apart for the typical job candidate with a Liberal Arts degree.

What jobs might exist in the field of finance? Luckily for you, we’ve asked ourselves this question and put together what we discovered. If you are a college graduate with a degree in finance then you can look forward to enjoying the perks from any of these jobs.

Budget Analysts
Aspiring budget analysts are required to have excellent skills in math and computer programs like Excel, as well as basic interpersonal and communication skills. Entry level analysts are expected to have a bachelor’s degree in any financial discipline but those with master’s degrees are given more preference and opportunities.

As budget analysts, you will be tasked to help businesses, agencies and organizations draw up a sound budget review and implementation plan. Additionally, you will be expected to create and to compile date and budget reports to help businesses take better control of their expenses and income.

Personal Financial Planners
Personal financial planners work for a wide spectrum of clients. Anyone hoping to get in this kind of position should have good verbal and written communication skills apart from completing a bachelor’s degree.

Financial planners or consultants are primarily given the role of offering sound insights and recommendations to clients making investment plans and long term retirement decisions. Drawing on their client’s financial goals and information, a financial adviser maps out a plan to help businesses achieve their objectives. Working as a personal financial planner, in addition to those duties, also allows you to sell insurance policies, investment portfolios and real estate, provided that you acquire the proper licenses to do so.

Auditors
If you are eyeing a career in an auditing firm, then you will have to obtain a bachelor’s degree in some field related to finance, especially accounting. Qualification as a Certified Public Accountant, or CPA, is also required by some finance firms.

Working as an auditor requires verifying and checking on the accuracy of financial reports and records in addition to reviewing bookkeeping policies and making recommendations for improvements of financial practices. As an auditor, you can either work internally for a private company or externally where you audit records from various clients and contractors.

Investment Bankers
An investment banker is someone who works to increase capital for various firms, companies and even municipalities by managing assets and trading securities. In addition, bankers of this caliber may also hold particular specializations in bond and program trading.

Accountant
From basic bookkeeping to tax preparation and declaration, accountants provide an array of important financial services to companies in order to ensure sound operations and implementation.

Stock Broker
Stock brokers working on behalf of clients are responsible for buying securities or putting them up for sale. More often than not, brokers are hired by brokerage firms that cater to several other clients.

It might seem impossible, especially if you’ve recently graduated from school, to score that first job for your chosen career path. The common complaint of the day is that graduates will be overqualified for whatever job they end up working; however, don’t give up just because you’ve encountered a minor setback. It’s easy enough to get comfortable in a steady yet boring job that you don’t enjoy, but you need to keep looking for that real first job which begins a lifelong career. The rebound in the financial markets and slow return of confidence in business expansion means that new jobs will be opening across all areas of finance. Keep an eye open, and be ready to put your education to work.
