Visibility Through Philanthropy: Expand Your Network by Raising Your Visibility Within a Charity

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

When clients tell me they need to do a better job of networking, there are two things I want to know:

* How they define networking
* What’s stopping them

As it happens, how they define networking is often what’s stopping them. That may sound strange, so let me explain.
Visibility through Philanthropy: Expand your network by raising your visibility within a charity
If your idea of networking is to find and attend a networking meeting, that probably doesn’t sound very inspiring. And it isn’t. The prospect of walking around in a roomful of strangers hoping to find someone who might be able to help isn’t a possibility that excites me, either. Although there are some terrific groups that get together to help each other, all groups are not created equal. Despite the exceptions, I’ve never been a big believer in this approach for one simple reason: Networking meetings tend to attract people who don’t consider themselves well-connected.

How helpful is that? (more…)

Support Groups for Jobless Americans Get Creative

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011

Support groups for the unemployed are getting creative as the jobless rate stays stubbornly high, trying approaches from using Weight Watchers-style accountability to encouraging people to work for free.

Support networks have previously popped up after large-scale layoffs. But with nearly one in 10 Americans now out of work, they are becoming more widespread and accepted, said career consultant Alison Doyle.

“The stigma attached to being unemployed that was there in the past isn’t as prevalent now,” Doyle said. (more…)

Jobseeker Mistake in Social Media, Tweeting: “hopefully these mofos…..”

Candidates make mistakes all the time - being too aggressive, unprofessional email addresses, ring tone rings, funky voice mails, bad mouthing previous employers, and the list goes on, right?

Well, I did a search for GEICO hiring on twitter to see what tweets have been posted this morning. I did the search not because I’m searching for a job, but because I do some work with GEICO with video SEO and social media.

As I scanned the tweets I come across this status update: (more…)

Business, Branding and Locomotives [Learn from the way recruiters think]

Put two trains on separate tracks equal distance from a concrete barrier. One train has just a locomotive, but with a much larger and more powerful engine capable of producing a higher speed. The smaller locomotive has many rail-cars and a caboose (a complete train). It’s weight is much greater than the other train, but it’s engine is not as strong. My question to you is which train ends up going further down the track after impact against that concrete barrier? The locomotive with just a strong engine, or the complete train with four times the weight?

I’ve been a producer of revenue throughout my entire career. Come to think of it there has not been a month in the last 75 months that I have not been judged on how much revenue I have been able to produce for the company I was working for. I have seen many people come and go in my industry and some of those people were so good at sales that I would go to their desk to borrow a pencil and they would end up selling me an eraser and a stack of post it notes before I could say no. Who are you?
What is your Cultural Identity?

What is your stage of Identity Development and how can this impact your career?

How adept are you at working with diverse people and/or for a Global Employer?

The workplace is increasingly global and diverse. Each of our job titles and roles increasingly is intertwined with both national and multinational interests, technologies, operations, suppliers etc. We all have multiple roles within our division, company, sector and industry and interact with a widening assortment of colleagues, vendors, suppliers and customers. Thus, it is imperative to understand our own identity issues, whether we are part of minority group or part of the majority sub-culture. Ideally, we would all strive to better understand our own cultural identity and achieve higher levels of identity integration. (more…)

How Long Should You Wait for a Business Appointment?

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

King Louis XVII of France once said, ‘Punctuality is the courtesy of kings.’ Nearly 200 years later, some businesspeople still haven’t perfected this courtesy. If you have an appointment to meet someone, and that person is late, how long should you wait?

No matter where you are on the food chain, there is a basic level of interpersonal courtesy, which is reciprocal. It applies to all people all the time regardless of anyone’s given role, i.e., potential employer or employee, and regardless of the economic climate.

We’ve put together a few scenarios to instruct and inform when enough is enough when waiting for a meeting to start. (more…)

Job Seekers Must Run a Spread Offense

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

I played football at the University of Tennessee and had the privilege of getting a ‘whiff’ (no pun intended being a kicker) of what was cooking in the professional ranks until banging my silverware on the table begging for food only resulted in me receiving a main course of reality; I was not going to play professional football in the NFL so it was time to move on.

I tell you this to liken the similarities between football, the current career marketplace, and what job seekers are not getting quickly enough. (more…)
