5 Rewarding Reasons to Become a Teacher

become a teacher

If you find yourself dissatisfied with your current job or looking for a new direction in life, becoming a teacher is a viable career path that is extremely rewarding. There will be many challenges and it could very well be the hardest thing you ever do, but the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks.

Consider the top five reasons to quit a current job in order to become a teacher.

Being a Positive Influence

Imagine the impact on the lives of others. Teachers hold the future in their hands as they deal with youth, nurturing them and helping them along the way. For many children, teachers are the only people they can rely upon in life, while school is a safe haven. No one would get anywhere in life if it were not for teachers providing guidance and inspiration. Parents are the first teachers children will have and then educators in the school take them the rest of the way.Teachers often become a point of inspiration and leadership for the entire community.

Great Benefits

There are good benefits. No one goes into the teaching field for an astronomical paycheck. The pay scale for most teachers is fair at best. It will take them twenty years to have a salary comparable to other professions. However, the amount is respectable. One of the greatest advantages to being a teacher is having benefits. Teachers generally have excellent insurance with reasonable contributions. In addition, they will have a retirement program. A set number of sick days and personal days are available each year. They accumulate and upon retirement, sick days are often available for purchase.

Summer Vacations and Holiday Breaks

Summer vacations and other breaks are a perk. Teachers do have a large number of paid holidays and vacations, and it’s wonderful to have those extra days off. However, educators may feel it is necessary to enjoy that additional time off for a high pressure position. The public may not be aware of the stress that can be involved in teaching. In addition, educators do not leave their job at the door when they leave school. Many spend long hours into the night and on the weekends, devoted to planning and grading.

Reasonable Hours

The hours are reasonable. For the person who works the night shift or has lengthy shifts, an eight hour day is reasonable. However, anyone interested in teaching should be aware that there are faculty meetings, special events, and planning that will require longer hours. It is often up to the individual teacher when it comes to how much time is dedicated to the school outside of regular hours.

Time for Family

Teaching is a family-friendly job. Teachers who are parents love being able to have a schedule that coincides with their children’s day, making it often unnecessary to continue or find childcare once the children begin school. In addition, administrators are often accepting when family commitments come first. Educators are usually home for dinner and have weekends to dedicate themselves to their spouses and children. Matching vacations make it possible to go away as a family. Teachers can often find time for their own children’s sports and other events as well.
