Tips For Landing A Job In The Healthcare Industry

Tips For Landing A Job In The Healthcare IndustryAmidst the economic climate of the last few years, the healthcare industry has proven to be one of the few industries to exhibit reliable, consistent growth. Healthcare is a field which will always be in demand. As a result, many people have been looking to healthcare as an opportunity for a secure career path.

However, many people do not have the time, drive or resources to pursue the necessary schooling to be a doctor or nurse.

Luckily there are countless other opportunities in both clinical and non-clinical support capacities which do not require this special training, many of which might be perfect for your current skill set.

Therefore the real challenge is how to break into the healthcare industry. In this article we will explore some helpful tips which can help you get your foot in the door.

Research

In order to break into the healthcare field you should familiarize yourself with news and trends in the industry, as well as the most important companies and prominent individuals.

By doing your research, you can find not only potential opportunities for employment, but also enable yourself to speak intelligently about the industry if you find yourself in an interview setting. This will also be an important element of the next point:

Networking

You will want to network with and get to know people who are already a part of the healthcare industry. Building contacts with people in the healthcare industry will help you greatly once you start to actively hunt for a position (as the old adage goes, “It’s not what you know but who you know”).

This will entail a combination of both online and in-person networking.

Volunteering your time and joining professional healthcare associations are two great ways to get to know people who already work in the field. At the same time, start building connections with healthcare professionals online through social media and online forums. There are many sites which exist expressly for the purpose of helping you build professional connections.

Don’t Underestimate Your Skillset

While you may not have studied as a nurse practitioner, you do probably have some skills which would be transferrable to a career in the medical field.

For example, people with experience in information technology are always in high demand, as are people with accounting, sales or human resources experience. These are just a few of the potentially transferrable skillsets which can help you land a job in the healthcare industry.

Even if the range of jobs available to you based on your skillset might not be where you would like to ultimately end up, do not overlook your accrued skills – once you land a job in the healthcare industry, you can get on-the-job training to help you land better positions down the road.

Find Yourself a Mentor

Once you have a position in a medical office or hospital, the best way to continue your advancement is to find a mentor. By demonstrating your tenacity and willingness to improve, you should be able to attract the attention of someone who is well-connected and can help you expand your own professional network.

This person may also be able to help you land higher-level positions later on, as well as navigate the politics of the healthcare system.

If you have considered attempting to move into the secure and lucrative field of healthcare, base your approach around these basic pieces of advice. By doing this, you can make a career in healthcare more than just a vague notion – you can make it your reality.
