A six-figure salary and three weeks of paid vacation time? Bring it on! Those are things every employee would love to have. But they also realize it’s probably not going to happen. There are some things that employees want from their employers that aren’t too much to ask for, though.

There are a few simple things that every employer should give to their employees to make them happy. And of course, happy workers equal productive and loyal workers. Here’s what employees really want from their employers.

Praise and Recognition
What’s the point of working so hard if no one ever realizes you’re doing it? Most of your employees are working their butts off, and what they want in return is some simple praise and recognition. It’s amazing how far a pat on the back and a, “Good job!” can go. Don’t assume that your employees know you appreciate their success. Make it a point to tell them. Call them into your office to deliver a personal message of praise. Stick a note on their desk. Compliment their work. Whatever you can do to recognize their efforts, do it.

A Healthy Atmosphere
Your employees spend almost the majority of their waking hours at work. They want a workplace environment that makes them happy to get up in the morning, not dread walking through the door. Make sure the workplace has a healthy atmosphere. They should feel encouraged to voice their opinions without judgment and be free from any forms of harassment. It also really helps to have a bright, sunny workspace.

Advancement Opportunities
Most people want to get to the top of their field and aren’t content with entry-level positions. Everyone in your company should feel that they have an opportunity to advance. It will make them work harder, and it will make them feel better about their jobs when they know something better is within reach. Advancement opportunities don’t have to be just promotions. They can also be opportunities to further their education or receive additional training.

Special Perks
Your employees work for your company, so they expect to get something more than your average customer or client would. And if you don’t give big bonuses, they definitely expect to get some kind of advantages to working for you rather than anyone else. Never underestimate the power of a simple, hearty employee discount, for example, or a never-ending supply of free, gourmet coffee in the break room.

A Sense of Community
Since work is like a home away from home, your employees enjoy having a sense of family or community within the workplace. Do whatever you can to foster good relationships at work. Make company activities, trips, and picnics available to all. Encourage group efforts for special projects like fundraising for a local cause. When it’s someone’s birthday, have everyone in the office sign a giant card and splurge for a cake. These things will help your employees enjoy their jobs more when they feel that they’re more than just another worker drone.
