In most work the highest risk we come across is spilling a hot drink on ourselves, however that doesn’t mean that this is all most people are at risk of in the work place and there are a number of high risk professions out there.
Over quarter of a million people in the UK are injured in the workplace each and every year and around 250 die in the workplace. Generally, these are injuries sustained in some of the more high risk workplaces in the UK – so, let’s take a look at the high risk jobs.
Bomb Disposal
The bomb disposal experts the army has are known as ‘Felix’ simply because they have 9 lives akin to that of a car. Felix is doubly at risk when at work. They have to disarm weapons and also need to avoid being shot by enemy snipers. It’s the most dangerous job in the world, but if you’ve got the nerve the buzz is meant to be amazing.
Oil Rigger
Working as an oil rigger on the North Sea or anywhere for that matter is also an extremely dangerous job. The risks include the sea, explosions and also the threat of terrorism. In the Middle East and Africa, these riggers are commonly taken hostage and killed.
Construction
The building industry is a less glamorous area to work in and one that’s extremely risky thanks to the height work involved. Around 80 people die a year in the UK construction industry, one of the highest rates of all. Scaffolders are at the greatest risk as they work from a height and account for under a third of all construction deaths. Around 10 per cent of injuries are caused by lightening or electricity.
Lorry
Lorry drivers are also a high risk group when it comes to work and being sat behind a wheel is a great way to increase the chance of death. Road accidents kill thousands a year in the UK and lorry drivers are highly at risk. Work vehicles are involved in over 50,000 crashes a year.
Lorry drivers suffer long hours behind the wheel of huge machines and many fall asleep when there. Take for instance the 2001 case of a driver who drove off the M62 onto a railway line and caused a train crash that killed 10 and caused injury to 76.
Deep Sea Divers
Diving is a high risk area and one that causes all sorts of issues and has a range of threats that regularly warrant work accident claims.
Drowning is only one of the many risks associated with being a armed force or industrial deep sea diver and there are also a number of other issues. High gas consumption can create an increase in oxygen and also nitrogen in the blood and this result in narcosis – something that happens when divers go below 100m in the water. Aside from this there are all sorts of mental issues that take their toll too.
So, if you think you have it bad, it’s likely that you don’t, as these are far higher risk places to work.
