Working From Home – Here are the Great Ideas

Tuesday, December 4th, 2012

If you love the idea of going to work in your pajamas, here is some good news for you: working from home is more common now than it has ever been before. This is partly because there are lots of different companies that are figuring out how to allow their employees to telecommute. It’s also because every day more options become available for people who want to start and run their own home-based businesses.

If you know that you definitely want to work from home (at least part of the time), you need to search for positions that allow you some room for independence. If your job is highly structured and requires a lot of team work and supervision, you might not be able to do it from home as video conferencing can only go so far. Sales and marketing jobs, writing and design jobs and even quite a few data entry/analysis jobs are all far better suited to the part or full time telecommuter. (more…)

Strategies for Modern Day Job Seekers

Monday, December 3rd, 2012

Searching for a job can be a hard, mundane, often unrewarding task. At times, you can send out dozens or even hundreds of emails before getting a promising interview. Of course, that really only applies if your job seeking strategy involves two steps: finding jobs on craigslist, and applying for them by email.

There are similar two-step programs out there, but essentially, people expect that jobs will fall in their lap just because they feel qualified for the job. So, they put out a bunch of resumes in a short period of time and become frustrated when they don’t know why their mass-email tactics aren’t paying off.

Well, my job seeking friend, you’re in luck. You’re about to read how to go above and beyond the mass-email tactics and learn the ins and outs of creating a much more comprehensive and effective strategy.

The market is more competitive than ever, so you need to be, too. (more…)

3 Steps to Kick-Start Your Online Job Search

Whether you are searching for technology, marketing, healthcare or finance jobs, following these guidelines will help you launch a successful online job search within any industry.

#1. Develop a clear objective

Steps to Success: Kick-Start Your Online Job SearchYou already know that smearing an objective across the top of your resume is an outdated idea. However, having a primary objective to guide your overall job search is a good strategy. It will help you establish your target, keep you focused and give structure to your search.

First, explore areas where you excelled in past jobs and think about things that energized and fulfilled you. Then, take your experience, education and achievements into consideration while making a list of job titles that match your unique qualifications. Think outside the box in this step. It will narrow your lens, yet bring new jobs into focus. (more…)

Employer Obligations to Temporary Workers

Thursday, November 22nd, 2012

Increasing numbers of employers are using temporary workers from staffing agencies, whether to meet short-term needs or to replace laid off employees.

Since a host employer often exercises control over temps regarding daily tasks, working hours or similar conditions of employment, it can become a joint employer under various laws.

Although the staffing agency is the employer for taxes and payroll purposes, a host employer still has some responsibilities under anti-discrimination laws, the Family and Medical Leave Act and the Fair Labor Standards Act. (more…)

Medical Executive Management Leaders Command Excellent Salaries

As Baby Boomers age and begin to make larger demands on the American health care system, the need will also increase for medical facilities and for medical executive managers to run them. As a result, career prospects for aspiring medical executive managers are favorable. This is especially true for candidates with advanced degrees.

Medical executive managers are typically paid well for their services. Individuals at the executive level command salaries that sometimes reach six figures. Although some evening and weekend hours may be required to deal with emergencies, medical executive management leaders usually work a regular five day weekday schedule, leaving time to pursue leisure activities and spend time with their loved ones. An Argument For Working For Free: Voluntary Work and Unemployment

Monday, November 19th, 2012

Hello, my name is Kelly Clay. I am 29. I have three arts degrees, all of them 1sts or with distinctions. I am unemployed. This is not an unusual state of affairs, especially in THE CURRENT ECONOMIC CLIMATE. I say THE CURRENT ECONOMIC CLIMATE with that force and emphasis about five times a day, it doesn’t get tiresome, it makes me feel like I am part of something, a rolling critique of coalition policy and deep recession living.

However, I have found a measure of balance and fulfillment through my (unpaid) work at the British Heart Foundation charity shop down my street. What follows is a truthful assessment of the pros and cons of undertaking voluntary work when you don’t have an income of your own. (more…)

Wednesday, November 7th, 2012

If you’ve been employed for any length of time, you’ve undoubtedly attended an office party, been taken on a night on the tiles after a corporate event, an awards ceremony or even been invited to a boss’ wedding. Each and every one of these situations calls for a different etiquette, but they all share one common element: alcohol.

There’s no crime in enjoying a drink and least of all if your employer has brought in a mobile bar or cocktail mixologist to whip up something special, but many will still find themselves scratching their heads wondering if mixing business and pleasure this way is a good idea. (more…)
