Landing Your Dream Job in Five Easy Steps

Landing Your Dream Job in Five Easy Steps

We all aspire to the job of our dreams, to be employed doing something we love, so why then are so many of us stuck in the boring nine to five – those drudge jobs that pay the bills but don’t do much else for us?

Step One – Getting to Know Yourself

This may seem obvious but the first step to attaining your dream job is to identify what you love to do. What are your passions and dreams? What things REALLY interest you and can hold your attention? What are your skills and your weaknesses? Identify your natural talents.

Step Two – Qualifications and Experience

Degrees, MAs, PHDs, vocational qualifications are all vital but experience is also essential. If you haven’t got the desired experience then volunteer in your sector or find an internship – see it as the first step on the road to the job you love. Volunteering is a great way to network as well and can sometimes lead to a job offer. Another way to gain experience is to create it for yourself – if you want be an event manager put on your own events. Start small and gradually expand – there is no substitute for real experience. Employers admire enterprise and initiative and it will give you something real to talk about in interviews.

Step Three – The Internet is Your Friend (and your enemy)

These days a good online is presence is vital. Linked in, Facebook, Twitter and other online social sites are a great way of networking, creating an online presence and promoting your skills or business. Beware of what you put out there though – the wrong type of online presence could scupper your job chances rather than enhancing them. Your potential boss or client will not want to see pictures of you dancing naked on a pool table with a bottle of tequila in your hand. Keep your online presence friendly and professional.

Step Four – Stay Focused and Target Your Market

Once you have decided exactly what your dream job is you need to stay focused on your goal. This means research, voluntary work, networking, contacting employers directly and targeting the employment agencies that recruit in your sector. Always follow up on contacts and job applications – it pays to stay in touch.

Step Five - Stay Positive

Not always easy, but absolutely vital. Employers offering public affairs jobs respond well to a positive attitude, and being positive can help you to stay focused and motivated. If you suffer a setback try and view it in a positive light – perhaps it wasn’t the right organization for you or quite the right job, maybe something much better or more suitable is just around the corner. Whatever you do don’t give up at the first hurdle – if you really love something you will pursue it against all odds. J.K. Rowling submitted the first Harry Potter book to twelve different publishers before finally being accepted – in 2008 Forbes named her as the twelfth richest woman in Britain.
