5 Good Reasons to Choose a Travel Consultant Job

If you have an interest in travel and are considering a career as a travel consultant, you are in for a rewarding career. The travel industry is an exciting and rewarding business that has several benefits and advantages that come with the job. Also, as a travel consultant you can choose to work from a storefront or from your home.

1. Becoming a Travel Consultant

There are no actual certifications or degrees required to become a travel consultant; however, some travel agencies may require a high school diploma. If you want to increase your knowledge in the field of travel, there are courses available online and through community or technical colleges. Although the courses are usually not required, they can be beneficial, especially if you are not familiar with travel hospitality or conducting work on the computer. Once you become a travel agent you will receive a letter from a hosting travel agency and a photo ID that says you are a travel agent. Your ID card and letter are the key to availing yourself of the numerous benefits available as a travel consultant.

2. Travel Discounts

As a travel consultant you are qualified for travel industry rates. If you can verify that you are a travel consultant, cruise lines offer you fantastic discounts. Discount rates for cruises can often be as low as $35-50 per person, per day. As a travel professional you are allowed to bring a companion with you at the same discounted rates you pay. Hotels are more than happy to give travel consultants massive discounts on rooms, because they hope you will pass the hotels information on to your clients. Car rentals, escorted tours, airlines, even concert tickets can all be purchased as excellent discounts, often as much as 75% off of the retail price.

3. FAM trips

A familiarization trip (FAM), is one of the best benefits of being a travel consultant. FAM trips are trips created by travel suppliers to encourage travel consultants to learn about their facility. The travel consultant gets to experience what the destination has to offer at extremely discounted rates, often as much as 80% discounted. FAM trips are offered by resorts, hotels, cruise lines, convention/visitor bureaus and airlines. The goal of the trip is to familiarize the consultant with the product being offered in hopes of them referring the facility or service to their clients.

4. Making Money

As a travel consultant, the amount of money you earn can vary depending on a variety of factors, such as how much time and effort you put into your business. However, many travel consultants earn anywhere from 70% to 90% in commissions and performance bookings. One of the greatest benefits is that you can book your own travel arrangements and earn a commission that is paid back to you.

5. Tax Write Offs

As an independent travel consultant, you are the owner of your business. It is always suggested that you talk to a tax advisor concerning home business deductions; however, if you work from home, you may be eligible for a variety of tax advantages such as deducting part of your mortgage, utilities and traveling expenses.
