Graduate Jobs – What You Can Do With Your Degree in India, Asia and Europe

With a growing number of Universities opting to charge the full $36,000 per year for tuition fees, the question of which subject to study at University has become increasingly important. Now, more than ever, a degree is a lifelong investment and it is the student’s responsibility to ensure they choose a degree that will pay off. For those of you that have already graduated, we present a guide to how best to use your degree when looking for graduate jobs.

According to the BBC, Law, Psychology, Management Studies, Business Studies, Computer Science, English and Medicine are among the top 10 most common degrees subjects in the UK. However, with 20.5% of 2010 Biology graduates currently working in retail and catering, with similar figures for Law, Psychology and English, it is clear that a large number of graduates are unable to find a career that utilizes their qualification.

Similarly, 38.9% of Computer Science and IT graduates had begun careers as Information Technology Professionals. But what can you do if your degree subject isn’t one of the lucky few likely to land you your dream job?

Law

As a graduate of Law, you will have gained significant skills that you can use to boost your career prospects and transfer to the workplace. Many employers regard Law as an academically difficult subject, which you can use to your advantage and impress your potential employer with your strengths and insight.

You may find that both the public, private and voluntary sectors will be interested in your skills and your ability to apply these to a practical setting. In addition to jobs directly related to your degree (i.e solicitor, barrister and paralegal) there are several other areas where Law may be useful, for example: advice worker; chartered accountant; human resources officer, and patent agent.

Psychology

The most significant skills gained during a Psychology degree are believed to be the ability to communicate effectively, knowledge of IT, successful handling of data and statistics, and problem solving.

Aside from the many roles you can pursue as a psychologist (clinical, educational, forensic), there are several less obvious routes you can take, whilst still making the most of your degree. For example: psychotherapist; career advisor; human resources officer; and retail manager.

English

Whilst the most obvious step after a degree in English is to teach, it doesn’t have to be the only option. Many employers recognize the wealth of transferable skills gained during an English degree, such as the ability to work independently, time management skills and a good command of vocabulary and terminology, among others.

Other than teaching in British schools and colleges, teaching English as a second language is a good option for English graduates with a desire to travel. If leaving home doesn’t appeal, look into careers as an editorial assistant, an arts administrator, a charity officer, or in PR and advertising.

Medicine

In addition to developing practical and clinical capabilities, those who study medicine also graduate with a broad range of key transferable skills, such as decision making, logical reasoning, written and oral communication and teamwork.

These skills could come in useful in several career fields, most notably as a general practice, hospital and community health doctor, but also as a science writer, lecturer, international development worker and health services manager.

And the not so common degrees?

Puppetry

Graduates of BA (Hons) Puppetry at the Central School of Speech and Drama have landed jobs as Puppet Makers for National Theater, Puppeteers for BBC TV and Puppetry Workshop Leader across Asia.

Viticulture and Oenology

That’s the science and study of all aspects of wine and winemaking to you and I. Not just an excuse to carry on the drinking during study hours, graduates of a BSc (Hons) Viticulture and Oenology have gone on to become vineyard managers, winemakers, wine buyers, cellar managers, wine educator and, project scientists.
