How To Get The Job of My Dreams

1. Brush up on your skills

Prior to completing an application with a company, enroll in a few classes or workshops to brush up on your skills in this particular field. You may already know the basics, but if it’s been years since you’ve taken courses in this area, it pays to brush up on new developments. You might also seek an internship or volunteer work in this area. This looks good on your application and shows that you have recent experience.

2. Create a killer resume and cover letter

This is your opportunity to “wow” the employer and make a good first impression. Put together a cover letter and introduce yourself. This provides a synopsis of your skills and education, and if the employer wants salary requirements, include your desired salary in the cover letter. With regards the resume, include all information relevant to the position, such as past work experience, education, special skills and recognitions. Use strong powerful words, avoid slang and proofread multiple times.

3. How can you help the company?

Getting an interview is only the beginning. The next challenge is impressing the employer on the interview. Arrive at least 10 minutes early and dress professional. Be prepared to answer questions regarding how you can help the company. Don’t simply state your skills, but explain how these skills can specifically contribute to productivity and growth. Practice good eye contact, listen and be confident.

4. Showcase your knowledge

If you don’t know anything about the company, this can kill your interview and destroy your chances of getting your dream job. It isn’t enough to be familiar with the position and job description, you need to educate yourself on the company. The “About Us” page on the company’s website can provide a wealth of information, but you can also research the Internet for news stories.

5. Improve your reputation online

If you applied for a job 10 years ago, the employer wouldn’t turn to the Internet to check your background. However, this practice has become more and more common. Don’t let an employer discover negative information about you online.
