In his book Drive, Daniel Pink busts the myth that money is the main driver of career satisfaction. While that’s a commonly accepted assumption, his research shows that it’s simply not true. What he found is that motivation is actually driven by three core components. Purpose is one of the three essential components.

If you’re considering a career in teaching, want to know is teaching a fulfilling profession, and want to know if it will provide you with purpose, let’s look at what most current teachers would say absolutely:

Continued Learning: Most teachers have a naturally curious personality. Research has found that the best way to learn is by teaching others. When you teach, the need to explain concepts means you’ll get a deeper understanding of them than you would if you simply reviewed the material on your own. If you love learning, you’ll find that teaching is the perfect complement to one of the things that you already care about most.

Nurture Potential: There will always be bright kids who really do have the ability to accomplish whatever they want, but unfortunately don’t have the support and guidance at home that’s needed to put them on a path towards success. Since all these kids need is a push in the right direction, teachers who take this initiative can truly change a student’s life.

Autonomy: This is another one of the three core tenets of motivation that Daniel Pink identified. As a teacher, you will get to make a lot of decisions about the specific material you teach in your classroom, as well as how you teach it to your students. While you obviously have to meet specific benchmarks and other metrics, you will have a significant amount of control over what you feel is the best way for your students to learn.

Lasting Relationships: Whether it’s been a decade or over three, we all remember teachers who had an impact on our lives. The same will be true for students you teach if you decide to pursue this line of work. Not only will you get to build relationships with students throughout the course of the school year, but many of them will stay in touch with you well after they’ve finished your class.

An Ideal Schedule: Although this isn’t the most important upside related to being a teacher, it’s worth discussing the fact that teachers do benefit from a manageable schedule. While there will be times when you have to put in some extra hours, it’s nice to know that you won’t have to constantly worry about a boss telling you that you’re going to be stuck at the office until at least nine at night. Not only is a teacher’s schedule good for general health, but it’s also ideal for anyone who has or is thinking about starting a family in the near future.
