In the past, it was embarrassing for an individual to admit that he met his partner online. Online dating was reserved only for the desperate, and the majority of “real” relationships were forged outside of the Internet.

However, as time went on all forms of online interaction, including dating, became increasingly more acceptable. In fact, one in five relationships now begins online. Once lagging behind digital romance, changes in how adults access learning now bear real comparison.

Online Dating vs. Online Education
In just a few short years, online dating progressed from a distasteful activity to a preferred method of communication. People choose to date online because it is convenient, fast and accessible at home. Though it may seem like a stretch, the same brand of logic applies to online education. Much like online dating, online education offers several advantages over its offline counterpart. Also like online dating, online education has become increasingly more acceptable to scholars, employers and the general public.

The Appeal of Online Education
The many benefits of online education mirror those provided by online dating.
Increased accessibility. Like online dating, online education opens up life-changing opportunities to a number of people who can’t pursue their dreams in traditional settings. Because online education can be accessed from home, students don’t have travel to a classroom.

• Convenience. Both online dating and online education are more flexible than their traditional alternatives. Individuals can set their own schedules and move at their own pace.
• More options. Whether an individual is looking for a romantic partner or choosing a degree program, he will find more options if he looks online. Instead of being limited to only the local offerings, he will have access to programs (or people) from all over the country.

Online Education and the Advanced Degree
If going to school is like dating, then working toward a master’s degree is like trying to date with children. Much like a dating parent, most master’s degree students already have other responsibilities outside of schooling, such as a job or family to support. In both situations, scheduling can be difficult, and the individual must find a partner who is willing to accept his existing obligations. While the dating parent chooses to date online in order to solve the problem, the graduate student looks to online education.

Taking it a Step Further
Not only can an individual use the Internet to find a romantic partner and obtain a degree, but he can also use it to find a job when his academic program is complete. Along with common networking tools such as LinkedIn and Facebook, students can find potential job leads by connecting with peers from their online program or alumni from the online university they attended. Many online universities also offer career placement services that students can use to find positions after they graduate.

Regardless of whether he is looking for a person to connect with, a program to advance his career or his first job after graduation, the Internet can be a very powerful tool. Though skeptics criticized the validity of online education (and online dating) in the past, it’s clear that both media are quickly becoming more accepted, if not even preferred, by people everywhere.
