5 Reasons Going Back to School Can Help Your Career

It doesn’t take an economic crisis to get people thinking about the best ways to get ahead in their career. When an employee improves their skill set it enhances their chances of getting ahead in their current career or of making a jump to a new one. While heading back to school for more studies might seem like an expensive proposition and a lot of hard work, it can be worth it in the end.

Continuing education can improve an employee’s potential in a variety of ways:

1. Advancement – Learning new skills or advanced techniques can make an employee more marketable within their current organization, which can lead to promotions when positions come available. Most companies prefer to advance from within the organization when possible, and being up-to-date on the latest skills for the job will be a big plus.

2. More income – Certain professions, such as teaching, pay higher salaries based on the number and types of degrees held by an employee. Funding those college classes now will seem like a small, but valuable, investment as the higher income continues to stream in over the years.

3. Career change – The world of work is constantly evolving and what may have seemed like a good career a few years ago suddenly seems less so. Some may seek a new challenge in life and believe switching jobs may spark renewed interest. Going back to school can help an employee prepare to change careers by learning a new trade or by earning a degree in a field unrelated to the current job.

4. Making contacts – Going back to school provides new opportunities to make contacts that can help advance a career. From fellow classmates to the instructor, new insight can be attained as to what opportunities may be arising in the field that is being studied. These new friendships could also prove useful in the future.

5. Renewed interest - Sometimes, simply doing something out of the ordinary can spark a renewed interest in work. Going back to college to learn some advanced techniques could have the unintended consequence of reminding an employee why they wanted to work in that career in the first place. That employee may then return to work with a new vigor, in addition to some new skills they can use.

Going back to college can have many benefits for somebody seeking to improve their career. For some, it can lead to more income by putting them in a position to be promoted. Others might be able to switch to a career that offers more possibilities for advancement or personal growth. Other advantages may not be as easily measured but are just as important. No matter what the reason, going back to school is almost always a good investment in a person’s future.
