Christmas can be a very lucrative time of year for students. Below are a few ways that you can make money in order to pay for those holiday gifts or the travel to see family. Here are some seasonal odd jobs that are money making opportunities during the Christmas season:
Retail
This is the most basic of Christmas money-making opportunities. Before Christmas, people buy a lot, and somebody needs to be in the store to sell it to them. Most stores hire extra help at Christmas, and some places even open up only for a few months of the year. The mall is an excellent place to look for jobs since you can put in several applications at once, and if you get a job there, you can do your Christmas shopping after work and maybe even get some employee discounts.
Odd Jobs
As Christmas approaches, many people feel overwhelmed, so why not offer your help? Peruse classified ads or place your own offering to pick up Christmas gifts, go to the post office or run other errands for those who are unable to leave the house easily. You can also offer to do yard work, bake cookies or decorate the house. These jobs can be a lot of fun, and you can feel good about brightening the life of someone who doesn’t get a lot of company.
Santa Letters
One fun task that some students have found is offering to write letters from Santa Claus to children. This is a task that must be handled delicately, since you don’t want kids to be aware of the deception, but you can post online about your willingness to do this and charge a small fee for it. It can also really help you to get in the Christmas spirit.
Babysitting
The holidays bring with them lots of events for parents to attend, to say nothing of Christmas shopping outings. Why not advertise your services as a babysitter? This is especially good if you have children you have gotten to know. If they are already comfortable with you, it should be a pleasant experience for everyone concerned. Depending what time you babysit, you may also be able to get some studying in. Similarly, especially if you will be in town over Christmas, you can offer to pet-sit, a job that affords plenty of study time.
Gift Wrapping
Students are overworked, and many of them don’t want to bother taking the time to wrap their presents. Why not put up some signs around campus offering to wrap their presents for a small fee? Granted, it’s probably best if the students at least know who you are, but it can be a fun way of helping out a friend and making a little money in the process.
Caroling
Finally, if you are musically inclined, you can give the gift of song by performing on a street corner or going door to door. If you bring a bucket, hat or other object for people to toss coins in, you just may be able to sing for your supper.
