What Do Employers Look for in CV Writing

With millions of people across the country out of work and looking for employment, the job market has never been more competitive. Employers receive hundreds of CVs every week so how do you make yours stand out from the masses?

CV writing is the first step in the job hunting process but in order to write an effective CV you need to identify what the employer is looking for and what they want to read. Each employer will be different depending on the roe they are recruiting for but there are some similarities in terms of CV writing.

The first thing to indentify is the job role. What is the job? What are the responsibilities? What skills do you need to do the job? What kind of person or personality would excel in this position? By asking and answering these questions you will be able to define what the employer is looking for on a CV. Most employers will scan a CV and if they don’t find what they are looking for they will move on to the next. So its crucial when writing a CV that you include all the relevant skills and experience at the top of the CV and make it as obvious as possible.

Once you have identified the job role and the skills you need to show, then you are able to start writing your CV. List down the key skills and attributes that make you the ideal candidate for the job and ensure you make them stand out.

Next, highlight your relevant work experience. An employer will be looking for work experience on your CV and they will want to see the responsibilities you have had and the kind of job roles you have worked in. Therefore when writing your CV you need to list down under each job ole a brief description of the job and the responsibilities you had in the position.

Employers want to see the impact you could have on their company so it is vital that you include facts and figures in your CV to back up your writing. Use statistics from previous work projects to show the impact you had on the company and try to use figures as this will help the employer to visualise what you may be like working in the job.

Creativity is something all employers look for too as employers want to know that you can bring innovative ideas to the company and help them progress. Show your creativity in your CV writing by demonstrating your previous work achievements and develop on this in your cover letter.
